Change the temperature, time, pressure or peel and you change the result. This guide explains how the tests are run, how to read the numbers on a datasheet and how to set up your press so that your garments perform the way the rating suggests.
How wash-fastness is actually tested
No single global standard covers every HTV factory, but most laboratory procedures, including ours, follow the same steps:
- The film is applied to a reference fabric (usually 100% cotton and 100% polyester) at the datasheet setting.
- The sample rests for 24 hours so the adhesive fully cures.
- It is washed in a domestic or laboratory washer at a fixed temperature, most often 40 °C, sometimes 60 °C for workwear grades, with a standard detergent and a ballast load.
- It is tumble dried at low to medium heat.
- Steps 3 and 4 are repeated for the target number of cycles, typically 25, 50 or 100.
- After the last cycle the sample is inspected for cracking, edge lift, delamination and colour change, and often stretched to check elasticity.
So “50 washes at 40 °C” means the film reached 50 cycles under those conditions without failing inspection. It does not mean the transfer fails on wash 51, and it does not mean it will reach 50 washes if it was pressed too cold or dried on high heat.

Reading the rest of the datasheet
The wash count is only useful next to the conditions that produced it. A typical HTV datasheet lists:

If any of those lines are missing from a datasheet you receive, ask for them. A wash count without a temperature and fabric is not comparable between suppliers.
The four press variables and what each one does
Temperature
Heat melts the hot-melt adhesive so it can flow around the fibres. Too low and the adhesive sits on the surface as a skin that lifts in the wash. Too high and the film surface glosses, colours can dull and sublimation dyes in polyester start to migrate into the transfer.
The most common real-world problem is not wrong settings but a press that does not reach what its display shows. Clamshell presses in particular lose heat at the front edge and can read 10–15 °C above the actual surface temperature. Check yours with a surface thermometer or heat-indicating strips at four points on the platen before you trust the number.
Time
Time lets the heat travel through the carrier and film into the fabric. Thicker films and heavier fabrics need longer. The datasheet time assumes a single layer on a mid-weight fabric; add 2–3 seconds for a second layer or a heavy hoodie fleece, and do not compensate for a cold platen by adding time, because the adhesive still never reaches its flow point.
Pressure
Pressure pushes the molten adhesive into the weave. Uneven pressure is the leading cause of a transfer that adheres in the middle and lifts at one corner. Seams, zips, buttons and printed labels all lift the platen off part of the design. Use a pressing pillow, a foam pad or a heat-resistant seam cover to level the area, or move the design away from the obstruction.
On a manual clamshell, medium pressure means moderate force on the handle to close it; on a pneumatic press, 2–3 bar (30–45 psi) is a normal starting point.
Peel
The peel type is a property of the adhesive formulation, not a preference:
- Hot peel films release the carrier immediately after pressing. They speed up production and are common on PU sports grades.
- Warm peel films want a few seconds of cooling. Pull too early and the film stretches.
- Cold peel films must cool fully, usually 20–30 seconds. Most PVC and glitter grades are cold peel. Pulling them hot lifts edges and leaves adhesive on the carrier.
After peeling, a second press of 3–5 seconds with a silicone or parchment cover sheet embeds the film further and matts down the surface. It measurably improves wash results on cotton.
A step-by-step application routine that protects the wash rating
- Verify the platen temperature with a thermometer, not the display.
- Pre-press the garment for 3–5 seconds to remove moisture and flatten the fibres.
- Position the design, carrier side up. Use a cover sheet if the film is glossy or if you are layering.
- Press at the datasheet temperature, time and pressure.
- Peel according to the roll label.
- Post-press for 3–5 seconds with a cover sheet.
- Let the garment rest 24 hours before the first wash so the adhesive fully cures.
Skipping any one of these shows up in the wash test more than in the initial appearance.
Wash and care instructions to pass on to the end customer
The lab rating assumes the garment is treated reasonably. What you tell the customer matters:
- Wait 24 hours after pressing before the first wash.
- Wash inside out at 30–40 °C. Workwear grades tolerate 60 °C; check the datasheet.
- Use a standard detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, which attack the adhesive at the edges.
- Tumble dry on low or medium; do not use dryer sheets.
- Never iron directly on the transfer. Iron inside out or over a cover sheet.
Printing these five lines on a hang tag prevents the most common complaint, edge lift after a hot wash with softener, rather than repairing it.
